The security situation in Mali is entering a new critical phase after simultaneous attacks targeting several strategic positions across the country, reviving concerns from regional and international partners about the stability of the Sahel. Coordinated offensives were reported this Saturday morning, April 25, 2026 in key cities, including Bamako, Gao, Sévaré, Kidal, and Kati, marking a significant escalation in a context already marked by persistent security pressure.
According to the Malian armed forces headquarters, armed terrorist groups not yet formally identified targeted military installations and sensitive points, including the Bamako-Sénou international airport and the strategic garrison of Kati. Military authorities indicated that retaliatory operations were immediately launched, with sweeping actions still ongoing to secure the affected areas and prevent any further extension of the attacks.
These events occur in a context of recurrent tensions fueled by the activities of armed groups operating in the region, including the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, already involved in major offensives against security infrastructure, notably the attack in September 2024 against the Faladié base and the airport zone of Bamako.
Faced with this deteriorating security situation, the African Union expressed strong condemnation of the attacks and reaffirmed its commitment to peace and regional stability. The President of the Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, called for increased mobilization to protect civilian populations and prevent any escalation that could further weaken the country’s security balance.
On the ground, the situation remains particularly tense around the Malian capital and in the north of the country. Security alerts have been issued by several diplomatic missions, while unconfirmed reports mention the capture of certain strategic points in Kidal by the Azawad Liberation Front.
Beyond the security dimension, these developments highlight major geopolitical and economic issues for the entire Sahelian region. The stability of Mali remains a determining factor for the security of trade corridors, the continuity of investments, and the confidence of financial partners engaged in infrastructure, energy, and development projects.
In this context, the evolution of military and diplomatic operations will be crucial to restore a climate of lasting security. For international decision-makers and economic actors, the consolidation of regional cooperation mechanisms appears more essential than ever to contain transnational threats and preserve growth prospects in the Sahelian region.
