The latest data on consumer prices show a slight slowdown in annual inflation in April 2026, at 13.4%, compared to 13.5% in March. According to a statement released on May 6 by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), the general index of consumer prices at the national level stood at 287.9 points, representing a monthly increase of 1.2% compared to March 2026.
This monthly increase is explained by the rise in prices of several essential products, including vegetables (+5.1%), fruits (+3.8%), fish and seafood (+1.8%), cereals and bread (+1.4%), as well as oils and fats (+1.2%).
Housing also contributed to this increase, with a 5.4% increase in actual rents, a 2.5% increase in prices of electricity, gas and other fuels, and a 2.6% increase in housing maintenance and repair costs.
In services, transport fares increased by 5.1%, postal services by 4.2%, hospital services by 3.5%, and organized tourist trips by 5.4%. The prices of prepared meals, on the other hand, increased by 3.9%.
Increases were also observed for tailored clothing (+2.1%), household appliances (+2.7%), and personal care products (+2.6%).
Conversely, the decrease in prices of meat and poultry (-6.4%), as well as dairy products, cheese, and eggs (-0.3%), helped to mitigate the inflationary trend during the month.
