The Egyptian government has unveiled the main directions of the 2026/2027 budget, focusing mainly on expanding social protection and supporting the most vulnerable populations. Credits for support and social protection reach 832.3 billion Egyptian pounds (approximately $16.6 billion), up 12% from the previous year, illustrating the state’s commitment to strengthening social justice, the Ministry of Finance said.
According to an information note, subsidies for food products amount to 175.3 billion pounds (approximately $3.5 billion) and benefit more than 60 million citizens. Furthermore, 55.3 billion pounds (approximately $1.1 billion) are allocated to financial assistance programs, including “Takaful and Karama” and social security, covering nearly 4.7 million families.
At the same time, 104.2 billion pounds (approximately $2.1 billion) are allocated to support the electricity sector, a 39% annual increase, to improve service quality, secure supply, and develop transport and distribution networks. The government also plans to allocate 13 billion pounds (approximately $260 million) to support housing for low and middle-income households, through subsidies for public services, interest rates, and direct assistance. In addition, 4.6 billion pounds (approximately $92 million) will be allocated to the Urban Development Fund, aimed at rehabilitating informal areas and building decent housing.
Finally, 69.1 billion pounds (approximately $1.38 billion) will be dedicated to purchasing local wheat from farmers, following the increase in the purchase price of ardeb to 2,500 pounds, with the aim of increasing national production and reducing dependence on imports from next year.
