A Ugandan military helicopter carrying eight people from the African Union peacekeeping mission crashed on Wednesday, July 2, in Mogadishu, Somalia. The helicopter, operated by the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), crashed at Aden Adde International Airport, the main airport in Somalia, as it was attempting to land.
A fire broke out immediately, quickly contained by rescue services. The helicopter was headed to Baledogle, the largest military airbase in Somalia, located about 90 kilometers northwest of the capital, Mogadishu.
Three of the eight people on board were rescued and taken to the hospital of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) for treatment. Aviation authorities have not officially confirmed the fate of the other five occupants, but have indicated that an investigation into the causes of the accident has been opened.
So far, the cause of this accident has not been disclosed.
