Published on August 15, 2026, the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) offers a new snapshot of the international hierarchy of knowledge. Beyond the ranking of institutions, this edition highlights a fundamental reality: in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy, research, innovation, and human capital are now essential determinants of a nation’s power.
According to the United Nations and the World Bank, good governance is based on five pillars: the rule of law, transparency, accountability, participation, and the effectiveness of institutions. But governance, important as it may be, is not enough. A country’s economic future also depends on its ability to produce, attract, and retain knowledge.
The experiences of China and South Korea demonstrate the importance of investing in research and integrating scientific diasporas into national laboratories. Conversely, the brain drain represents a significant loss of human capital for Africa. Every year, doctors, engineers, academics, and researchers leave the continent, mainly due to unemployment, insufficient scientific infrastructure, unattractive salaries, or governance deficiencies.
It is in this context that the 2026 edition of the Shanghai ranking should be analyzed, which is mainly based on scientific and academic performance. The ARWU notably takes into account Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals obtained by former students and researchers, the number of highly cited researchers, publications in Nature and Science, articles indexed in major international scientific databases, and academic performance relative to the size of the institutions.
Harvard Still at the Top
The 2026 ranking once again places Harvard University at the top spot globally. The top of the table remains largely dominated by American and British institutions, while the University of Paris-Saclay confirms France’s presence among the global elite.

This dominance reflects not just a simple competition between universities but a global concentration of research capabilities, funding, talent, and scientific infrastructure.
Asia Asserts its Scientific Power
The rise of Asia is one of the major transformations in the global knowledge economy. China, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea now have institutions capable of competing with the best Western institutions.
Highlighted Asian institutions include Tsinghua University, Peking University, the National University of Singapore (NUS), the University of Tokyo, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Kyoto University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
France still has several leading institutions. Paris-Saclay ranks 13th globally and remains the top French university. The country also includes PSL, Sorbonne University, and Université Paris Cité among the top 100 global institutions mentioned in the ranking.
Africa: a Disconnect that Raises Concerns
The contrast with Africa remains significant. Despite considerable demographic potential and a rapidly growing student population, the continent is inadequately represented among the universities occupying top global positions.
South Africa and Egypt host a large portion of the cited African institutions. University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, University of the Witwatersrand, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and North-West University illustrate South Africa’s influence.
From Egypt, institutions such as Cairo University, Alexandria University, Ain Shams University, Mansoura University, Zagazig University, Al-Azhar University, and Assiut University are notable. Other African institutions mentioned include University of Ibadan in Nigeria, Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, and University of Ghana.
This limited presence serves as a warning for the continent. In the international economic competition, academic lag not only affects the academic field but directly impacts innovation capabilities, productivity, industrialization, digital transformation, and ultimately, economic sovereignty.
Arab World: Saudi Arabia in the Lead
In the Arab world, several institutions manage to position themselves in different segments of the global ranking. King Saud University is in the 101-150 range, while King Abdulaziz University and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) are in the 201-300 range.
Cairo University and King Khalid University fall in the 401-500 range. Alexandria University, Mansoura University, and Taif University are in the 501-700 ranges, while Ain Shams University, Al-Azhar University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and Zagazig University are in the lower ranges of the Top 1000 mentioned in the document.
These results highlight the significant impact of substantial investments made by Gulf countries in higher education, scientific research, university infrastructure, and attracting international researchers over the past years.
Knowledge as a True Raw Material
For Africa, the challenge goes far beyond the number of universities in an international ranking. It concerns the development model itself.
The continent has considerable natural resources, a young population, and expanding markets. However, raw materials alone are no longer enough to guarantee sustainable value creation. In the emerging global economy, wealth will increasingly depend on states’ ability to educate engineers, researchers, scientists, economists, and entrepreneurs, fund research, and transform discoveries into industrial innovations.
This requires profound reforms: improving university governance, increasing institutional autonomy, competitively funding research, fostering collaboration between universities and businesses, developing laboratories, better remunerating researchers, promoting international mobility, and policies that further engage African scientific diasporas.
The issue of language must also be addressed from the perspective of scientific efficiency rather than controversy. Proficiency in English, now a central language in international scientific production, is essential. However, this should not lead to neglecting national languages, French, or other international languages. In a multipolar environment, the ability to master multiple languages itself becomes a competitive advantage.
By 2030-2040, Africa has the necessary assets to play a much more significant role in the global economy. But this ambition requires transforming its demographic potential into human capital and its human capital into innovation capacity.
The main lesson from the Shanghai ranking goes beyond university rankings: the true wealth of a nation lies not only in its subsoil but in its knowledge, researchers, universities, and its ability to transform knowledge into economic and social development.
