French health insurer Alan acquired Tanel in June, a Senegalese company specialized in providing health coverage for businesses in Senegal and Ivory Coast. The transaction amount was not disclosed. This is Alan’s first operation in Africa.
Founded in 2021 by Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop, Tanel is licensed as an insurer and directly bears the risk associated with the contracts. It provides health coverage to businesses and relies on a network of over 1,200 pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals.
The company indicates that it covers around 70,000 individuals from over 400 companies, including 30,000 paying beneficiaries. It had raised $2.45 million before its acquisition, with $2.1 million raised in a funding round in 2024. Alan participated in this fundraising.
Tanel reported a profit in 2025, according to its CEO, who did not disclose detailed financial data. Senegal accounted for 90% of the revenue, while Ivory Coast accounted for 10%.
The two founders will remain in charge of Tanel and will report to Alan’s CEO. The company’s team will also join the French group.
The acquisition will allow Tanel to access Alan’s reinsurance mechanisms. The two companies also plan to integrate some of Alan’s services into Tanel’s activities.
