Chad is strengthening its external financing. On Thursday, August 20, the Minister of Finance, Tahir Hamid Nguilin, signed two agreements with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and China, totaling approximately $58.3 million, or nearly 32.6 billion CFA francs. These funds are intended to support economic reforms and several development projects.
With the AfDB group, the Chadian government has reached an agreement for 8 billion CFA francs, or approximately $14.3 million, dedicated to financing reforms and development projects. This support focuses on economic governance, domestic revenue mobilization, modernization of public administration, and improving the business climate.
The second agreement was signed with the Chinese ambassador to N’Djamena. It includes two grants totaling approximately $44 million, or nearly 24.6 billion CFA francs, aimed at financing development projects in Chad. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Francis Dogo, AfDB representative in Chad, and Wang Xining, Chinese ambassador.
For N’Djamena, these funds come at a time when resource mobilization remains a major challenge to support public investments and accompany ongoing reforms.
The AfDB has been involved in Chad for several years in sectors related to governance, infrastructure, agriculture, and economic and social development. China is also a key partner: its cooperation with Chad covers infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, and industry, through financing and grants for various projects.
Through these two agreements, the Chadian government aims to expand its financing options while advancing its economic priorities. The challenge now will be to transform these financial commitments into concrete projects and measurable results for the Chadian economy.
