China Chengxin International Credit Rating (CCXI) has confirmed Afreximbank’s AAA rating, with a stable outlook, for the second consecutive year. The agency expects to maintain this rating over the next 12 to 18 months.
In its report released on July 30 in Beijing, CCXI cited the bank’s strategic position, risk management, profitability, and liquidity as factors supporting its credit quality.
This evaluation comes as Afreximbank seeks to diversify its sources of funding and strengthen its access to international capital markets. In 2025, the institution issued a 2.2 billion yuan Panda bond (327 million USD), becoming the first African multilateral development institution to access the Chinese market.
The bank has also become a direct participant in the Chinese Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), facilitating its operations related to trade between China and Africa.
Afreximbank also holds investment grade ratings from several other agencies, including S&P Global Ratings (BBB+ long-term, A-2 short-term), GCR (A), Japan Credit Rating Agency (A-), and Moody’s (Baa2), with stable outlooks for the mentioned ratings.
