$36.5 million will be invested by the South African energy company Sasol in local development programs in Inhambane by 2030. The program will cover 70 communities spread across three districts: 33 in Inhassoro, 23 in Govuro, and 14 in Vilankulo, according to the annual presentation of the South African company’s operations in Mozambique.
Out of a total envelope of $43 million, including contributions from Companhia Moçambicana de Hidrocarbonetos (CMH) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), $20.8 million will be allocated to Inhassoro, $13.2 million to Govuro, and $9 million to Vilankulo. This second local development agreement is part of the gas concessions operated by Sasol in the province.
The program follows the first local development agreement, executed between 2020 and 2025, for an amount of $20 million. This agreement concerned 37 communities in Inhassoro and Govuro, where the three existing gas fields are located, within the framework of two concessions expiring in 2034 and 2050.
Achievements include 11 water supply systems, 25 new wells, the rehabilitation of 97 systems, and the restoration of 17 others. The program also led to the construction of seven two-classroom buildings, six community centers, and four football fields.
In economic activities, 20 irrigation systems were installed and cashew nut production programs were developed in 23 communities. The company also supported initiatives in horticulture, livestock, crafts, and local entrepreneurship. In total, the company’s investments in corporate social responsibility between July 2020 and June 2026 amount to $63.5 million, with $53.7 million directly funded by Sasol.
These programs are part of the local development agreements provided for by Mozambican legislation for extractive industry projects. They cover water and sanitation, energy, public infrastructure, income generation, and community development. Founded in 1950 in South Africa, Sasol is an integrated international company specializing in energy and chemicals, particularly known for its Fischer-Tropsch technology.
