Burkina Faso is strengthening its rice processing capacity with the commissioning, on October 20, 2026, of a public rice mill in Bagré. Financed with the State’s own resources, the unit is intended to enhance national production, although its investment cost has not been officially disclosed.
Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, inaugurated this industrial infrastructure managed by the state-owned company Faso Agropôles (SOFA) on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. With a capacity to husk 100 tons of paddy rice per day, it is part of the 2026-2028 Agro-pastoral, Hydraulic and Fishery Offensive, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The investment was funded from the national budget. However, no specific amount has been published in the official communications consulted, making it difficult to assess the cost of building the factory.
Equipped with a complete processing chain, the rice mill handles various stages, from cleaning the paddy to packaging white rice, including husking, whitening, polishing, optical sorting, and grain calibration.
The challenge goes beyond just industrial capacity. The unit is meant to facilitate the processing of paddy rice stocks purchased by the State directly from producers. The objective is to better valorize local crops, support agricultural outlets, and reduce dependence on imported processed rice.
For the authorities, food sovereignty also involves mastering the processing stages. During the inauguration, the Prime Minister called for the preservation of the infrastructure and entrusted SOFA with the responsibility of ensuring its sustainable operation, in collaboration with producers.
The profitability of this public investment will now depend on several factors: regular paddy supply, effective use of equipment, operating costs, and the ability to market the produced rice.
In Bagré, the challenge is to turn this new industrial capacity into sustainable economic results for the rice sector. The government announces the continuation of installing processing units in other regions of the country.
