Between organic growth, reshaping of the banking landscape, development of synergies, and digital acceleration with the launch of the neobank Simple, the group intends to continue its African momentum. Ismail Douiri, CEO of Attijariwafa bank, discusses the growth drivers and key transformation projects of the Group.

Interview by Ismael Sy, Casablanca

After nearly two decades of expansion in Africa, what is your assessment today of this strategy and what are now your main growth drivers on the continent?

Attijariwafa bank’s international development strategy on our continent was based on a simple premise: Africa is undergoing similar transformations in all countries: development of an urban middle class, integration of the informal economy into the formal sector, development of trade and international investment. A disciplined and rigorous implementation, under the supervision and with the support of its Board of Directors, allowed Attijariwafa bank to enter the banking market of 14 other African countries through 12 banks in which it holds the majority of the capital. These banks significantly contribute to its consolidated balance sheet and net income.

The withdrawal of several French banks from Africa is reshaping the banking landscape. Does this situation represent an opportunity for Attijariwafa bank, especially in the face of the growing strength of local and regional banks?

Attijariwafa bank is more confident in Africa than ever before. We are an African bank with a regional presence on our continent and we can consider that we are contributing to what you call the rise of African regional banks. We started this expansion a long time ago and have reached a size and regional coverage that provides us with development opportunities not only through acquisitions but also through organic growth potential. The departure of French banks has sometimes allowed us to acquire new clients who were looking for strong banks with an extensive correspondent network and a comprehensive product offering.

In this new African banking competition, what is your main competitive advantage today: the size of the group, its network, its market knowledge, or its ability to support companies in several countries?

There is no single main competitive advantage. It is the combination of these elements, as well as the credit rating, correspondent network, access to international currencies, and organization allowing us to offer the best of Attijariwafa bank group to all our clients in need. However, in all our markets, our competitors are also doing excellent work and we are required to continuously improve, otherwise we risk losing the benefit of these advantages.

What role do you now want to give to your various subsidiaries and specialized businesses in the group’s overall strategy? Where do you still see synergies to develop?

Our specialized financial subsidiaries are product expertise centers: leasing, factoring, mortgage credit, consumer credit, long-term leasing, transfers and payments, participative banking (Islamic finance in Morocco). Except for Wafacash, they are legally and regulatory present only in Morocco. However, they all develop partnerships, whether punctual or long-term, with our international banks, allowing them to share their skills and expertise and benefit our clients in our various presence countries. There are numerous synergies that are systematically approached and prioritized based on the needs of our clients. As for specialized businesses, they are often expertise in Corporate and Investment Banking. The teams in question are located in Casablanca, Abidjan, Cairo, Paris, and Dubai, and serve all our major Corporate clients wherever they are located.

You are preparing a new digital bank focused on simplicity. What kind of clientele are you targeting and how far can this new offering transform Attijariwafa bank’s traditional banking model?

Our neobank called Simple was launched last May in Morocco and is off to a great start. It coexists with our traditional model but offers a different journey and experience to serve its clients. The model you refer to as traditional is also evolving constantly due to various transformation projects and changes in client behavior. The bank is in motion, both in the physical network and in the digital realm.

What are the three main areas that will mobilize the group the most over the next two to three years: African expansion, digitalization, AI, business financing, risk management, or others?

It is undeniable that in the case of new acquisitions or entry into a new country, significant teams are mobilized, especially during the first 12 to 18 months, but regardless of acquisitions, digitalization is such a vast term that it seems to encompass a large part of the ongoing transformation efforts in the group.

“We are more confident in Africa than ever before” After nearly two decades of expansion on the continent, Attijariwafa bank is consolidating its presence in 15 African countries through 12 banks.
