The expert analyzes the ongoing changes in the African maritime sector, the challenges related to streamlining port flows, and the increasing role of artificial intelligence in building the ports of tomorrow.

“African port challenges are not only related to physical infrastructure”

What are the main obstacles to the efficiency and competitiveness of African ports today?
African ports play an essential role in the trade and economic development of the continent, but their performance is hindered by several factors: fragmented processes, multiple actors, processing delays, high logistics costs, and lack of visibility on flows.

In addition to these constraints, there is sometimes only partial digitalization, with systems that do not communicate sufficiently with each other. The stakes therefore go beyond the question of physical infrastructure alone. They also concern the organization of port passage, information flow, and coordination between different actors in the logistics chain.

The goal is to make port passage smoother, more predictable, and more transparent, in order to reduce trade costs, improve the attractiveness of logistics corridors, and strengthen the competitiveness of African economies.

“Data becomes the foundation of a new port governance”

How can digital solutions reduce delays and facilitate trade?
Digitalization primarily accelerates the flow of information between all stakeholders. In a port environment where public administrations and private companies are involved, having reliable, shared, and real-time information becomes a determining factor.

Port Community Systems (PCS) play a central role in connecting the various components of the port ecosystem: port authorities, customs, terminals, shipping companies, freight forwarders, and other operators. They facilitate the exchange and reuse of data. In parallel, the Maritime Single Window contributes to centralizing and dematerializing the regulatory formalities related to ships.

By reducing re-entries, physical movements, and document exchanges, these tools speed up operations, improve traceability, and reduce delays and costs. Digitalization also brings more transparency and visibility to the actors in the logistics chain.

“Artificial intelligence allows a shift from a reactive to a predictive logic”

What role can AI play in transforming port operations?
Ports today generate a considerable amount of data related to ships, goods, operations, delays, and available resources. The value lies in the ability to intelligently exploit this information.

Through the analysis of historical and operational data, artificial intelligence can help anticipate volumes, identify congestion periods, detect anomalies more quickly, and optimize resource utilization.

We are gradually moving from a logic where we observe a problem before acting, to a logic where we can anticipate situations and make decisions more quickly. For port authorities, this predictive ability improves planning and infrastructure utilization.

“An intelligent port is first based on a coherent vision of transformation”

What are the priorities for building sustainable and future-ready African ports?
The priority is not to multiply technologies, but to build a coherent transformation. A port does not become intelligent simply because it has several digital tools: these tools must integrate into a common architecture and meet clearly defined operational objectives.

This involves simplifying processes, ensuring system interoperability, improving data quality, and investing in local skills. Technology cannot produce lasting results without human and institutional ownership.

A port truly becomes intelligent when stakeholders, processes, systems, and data work together around a common vision of performance.

“Cybersecurity becomes a trust condition”

How to reconcile innovation, cybersecurity, and data governance?
As port operations digitize, data becomes a strategic asset. It is essential for system operation, decision-making, and the development of AI applications.

Cybersecurity must be integrated from the system design stage, with mechanisms for protecting information, access control, traceability, and operational continuity. Data governance must also specify rules for the production, access, sharing, and use of this information.

“We are entering the era of agentive AI”

What is Webb Fontaine’s vision for the future of African ports?
At Webb Fontaine, our ambition is to support African ports towards more integrated, intelligent, and efficient commercial ecosystems, where technology and data facilitate exchanges, enhance transparency, and improve decision-making.

Artificial intelligence represents a new stage in this evolution. Beyond predictive analysis, we are gradually entering the era of agentive AI: systems capable not only of analyzing information, but also of interacting with experts, adapting in real time, and further assisting in process execution.

The goal is not to replace human expertise, but to provide administrations and operators with tools to better exploit information, accelerate certain decisions, and focus human intervention where it adds the most value.

“Digital transformation is first and foremost a human project”

What lessons can Webb Fontaine’s experience bring to African countries?
A successful digital transformation is first a transformation project before being an IT project. Technology is a facilitator, but it must respond to processes, operational needs, and a shared vision among the various stakeholders.

It is essential to understand local realities, simplify processes before digitizing them, involve both public administrations and the private sector, and support change. User adoption is as important as the quality of the technology itself.

“Feminine leadership must participate in shaping the future of African maritime”

What role do women play in the transformation of the port sector?
Digital transformation opens up new opportunities to strengthen the presence of women in technical, strategic, and decision-making functions in the maritime sector.

This involves training, mentoring, and sharing experiences, but also increased representation of women in positions of responsibility and decision-making bodies. Women must be fully involved in the design and direction of ongoing transformations.

This commitment is also reflected within Webb Fontaine, a member of the Association for the Management of West and Central African Ports (AGPAOC), with involvement in the Network of Professional Women in Port Professions (RFPMP) of AGPAOC.

For Webb Fontaine, technological transformation and human capital development must progress together to build a more inclusive, innovative, and future-ready African port sector.

On the occasion of World Maritime Day, celebrated on September 24, Financial Afrik spoke with Sarah Ndaw, Vice President of Sales at Webb Fontaine.
