The announcement was made on August 18-19, 2026 by Mohammed Dewji, CEO of the Tanzanian group, following a meeting with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo in Maputo.

“We had a very fruitful discussion and we are committed to investing $250 million in Mozambique and trying to employ 20,000 Mozambicans,” Mohammed Dewji said after the meeting. This meeting is part of Mozambique’s efforts to attract more private capital and support economic growth, industrialization, and job creation, as the country seeks to consolidate its post-electoral stability.

A conglomerate with multiple branches

Operating in several sectors and in at least 11 African countries, the Tanzanian group Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Limited (MeTL Group) is involved in industrial production (textiles, consumer goods, agri-food), agriculture, energy and oil, trade and distribution. The group also operates in transport and logistics, financial services and insurance, real estate, infrastructure, as well as in mobile telephony and technologies.

With an annual turnover approaching 8 trillion Tanzanian shillings (≈ $3 billion), MeTL produces more than 50 product lines. The company claims to employ around 40,000 people.

Modest Mozambique-Tanzania trade

Bilateral trade between Mozambique and Tanzania remains modest, but largely unbalanced in favor of Tanzania. According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), in 2024, Mozambique exported about $4.59 million worth of goods to Tanzania. In return, Tanzania exported about $65 million worth of goods to Mozambique – which, on the Mozambican side, corresponds to imports of about $65 million from Tanzania.

The trade imbalance illustrates the current asymmetry between the two economies and the importance of the investment announced by MeTL, which could partially rebalance the flows by stimulating local Mozambican production and reducing dependence on imports from Tanzania.

MeTL Group plans to invest $250 million in Mozambique and aims to create an additional 20,000 jobs as part of its expansion in Southern Africa.
