Before their quarter-final of the World Cup, scheduled for Thursday, July 9, France and Morocco present themselves with economically profiles that are incomparable in size, but with distinct trajectories. The first remains a large developed economy, with high income. The second operates on a much smaller scale, but with significantly faster growth.<\/p>\n

In nominal value, France’s GDP reached $3,000 billion in 2025, compared to $182.37 billion for Morocco. The French economy thus weighs approximately 18 times that of Morocco. The wealth per capita is also significantly different: $48,985.7 per person in France, compared to $4,672.5 in Morocco. France also has 68.7 million inhabitants, compared to 38.4 million in Morocco.<\/p>\n

However, the difference in size does not tell the whole story of the current dynamics. In 2025, GDP growth was 0.8% in France, compared to 4.6% in Morocco, according to the World Bank. For 2026, the IMF projects a growth of 0.6% for France, compared to 4.9% for Morocco. In other words, the Moroccan economy remains much smaller, but it is advancing at a much faster pace than the French economy.<\/p>\n

In terms of prices and employment, the gaps are narrower, but not identical. The IMF anticipates inflation of 1.8% in France in 2026 and 1.3% in Morocco. In terms of the labor market, the World Bank shows an unemployment rate of 7.5% in France in 2025, compared to 9.0% in Morocco. France appears to be wealthier and more stable in terms of income, but Morocco lags behind in employment while benefiting from slightly lower projected inflation.<\/p>\n

Public finances also highlight two different situations. For France, the European Commission forecasts a public deficit of 5.1% of GDP in 2026 and a public debt approaching 120% of GDP by 2027. For Morocco, the IMF indicates that the budget trajectory remains compatible with a gradual decrease in the debt ratio; in its 2026 report, the institution projects a decline in the central government debt from 67.1% of GDP at the end of 2025 to 60.8% in 2031.<\/p>\n

Overall, the comparison pits a European economic heavyweight against a smaller but more dynamic emerging economy. France clearly dominates in terms of GDP, income per capita, and market depth. Morocco, on the other hand, stands out for its faster growth and more contained public debt.<\/p>\n

Before kick-off, the economic balance of power is clearly in favor of France; in terms of growth dynamics, the advantage lies with Morocco.<\/p>\n
