In Senegal, the Regional Customs Directorate of the South (DRS) confirms its strategic role in the economic and territorial security of the country. Following a six-day tour of the main customs units in the southern zone, the Director General of Customs praised, on Tuesday, June 9, remarkable results marked by an increase in tax revenues and an intensification of the fight against illicit trafficking.<\/p>\n

This field mission covered the customs offices of Ziguinchor, S\u00e9l\u00e9ty, Kalifourou, S\u00e9noba, and V\u00e9lingara, as well as the subdivisions of Ziguinchor and Kolda, which oversee a total of 19 customs units deployed in a highly strategic area for cross-border trade and economic security.<\/p>\n

Significant increase in tax revenues<\/p>\n

In terms of budgetary performance, the recorded results reflect a positive dynamic of mobilization of public resources. In 2025, customs clearances by the DRS reached 5.76 billion CFA francs (approximately 9.6 million US dollars), compared to 4.82 billion CFA francs (nearly 8 million US dollars) in 2024.<\/p>\n

Beyond tax mobilization, the Southern Regional Directorate has particularly distinguished itself in the fight against organized transnational crime. In 2025, customs units seized 387 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated value of nearly 31 billion CFA francs (approximately 52 million US dollars), highlighting the scale of criminal networks operating in the cross-border corridors of the sub-region.<\/p>\n

Agents also intercepted 5,168 kilograms of Indian hemp, representing a value of over 506 million CFA francs (approximately 843,000 US dollars), as well as significant quantities of counterfeit medicines valued at over 9 million CFA francs (approximately 15,000 US dollars), highlighting the economic and health risks associated with illicit trade circuits.<\/p>\n

An offensive extended to financial crime<\/p>\n

The fight against financial crime is also among the major results of the year. The units in the South seized 41,064 black currency notes, with an estimated value of 5.545 billion CFA francs (approximately 9.2 million US dollars), illustrating the strengthening of surveillance mechanisms against attempts at monetary fraud and money laundering.<\/p>\n

The results achieved in 2026 confirm this operational dynamic. To date, the Ziguinchor Customs Subdivision has already seized over 10 tons of cannabis, a sign of intensified surveillance and enforcement operations in this strategic area of Senegal.<\/p>\n

In a global context marked by the rise of transnational trafficking and the challenges of securing economies, the performance of the Southern Customs appears as a strong indicator of enhanced governance, aiming to consolidate public revenues, protect national markets, and enhance Senegal’s economic attractiveness to investors and international partners.<\/p>\n
