During the night of March 6 to 7, 2026, according to police sources cited by several local media outlets, a gang of suspected robbers attacked the home and gold purchasing company owned by Yacoubou Moussa in Bertoua, the capital of the East region of Cameroon. The suspected robbers made off with 15 kg of gold, equivalent to approximately 1.4 billion CFA francs (nearly 2.5 million USD). The seizure of this quantity of gold by the Regional Division of the Judicial Police of the East of Cameroon reignites the debate on gold traceability in Cameroon, amidst controversies surrounding exports and tightening of mining regulations.<\/p>\n

Beyond the violence of the robbery, this gold seizure directly raises concerns among Cameroonian economic and financial circles. According to analysts, this amount is equivalent to the annual turnover of some local Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).<\/p>\n

Furthermore, this discovery raises a central question: how can such a quantity of gold be stored in private homes, outside of any declared official channels? The issue is even more sensitive as Cameroon faces persistent controversies over the actual volumes of gold produced and exported.<\/p>\n

Several international reports have already highlighted these inconsistencies, such as analyses by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). These reports indicate significant discrepancies between locally declared production and volumes of gold imported by certain partners, notably the United Arab Emirates. These discrepancies fuel suspicions of smuggling, underreporting, and parallel marketing channels.<\/p>\n

State hardline
\nThe seizure in Bertoua also comes amidst a tightening regulatory framework. Since the reform of the mining law in 2023, the Cameroonian state has centralized the marketing of gold. Now, the National Mining Company (Sonamines) has an exclusive role in the purchase, centralization, and resale of the precious metal. This direction has sparked tensions with gold purchasing office unions, who demand the reinstatement of licenses revoked by the new legislation. Sonamines, so far, has refused to yield to these pressures, in the name of fighting fraud and securing public revenues.<\/p>\n

The Bertoua case tends to support this hardline approach. The private possession of over a billion CFA francs in raw gold underscores persistent flaws in the control of the gold value chain. It also highlights the possible link between organized crime, informal economy, and illicit financing.<\/p>\n

For public finances, the stakes are high. Every gram of gold escaping official channels represents a loss in tax revenue, as well as a distortion of export statistics. Ultimately, these discrepancies undermine the country’s credibility with technical and financial partners.<\/p>\n

The operation carried out by the East Judicial Police sends a strong signal. However, it does not reassure about the ability of the judicial and economic system to turn this security coup into lasting structural reform. As Cameroon seeks to better capture mining rent, the gold found in a private home in Bertoua serves as a reminder that the battle is fought as much in safes as in institutions.<\/p>\n
