By bringing together the main road transport unions of both countries, this meeting opens concrete opportunities to improve the flow of people and goods on one of the busiest commercial corridors in Central and West Africa.

Led by the Groupement des Transporteurs Terrestres du Cameroun (GTTC) and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), the initiative follows the strategic partnership signed in October 2024 in Tangier. It has received broad institutional support, with the presence of administrative authorities, security forces, national shippers councils, and chambers of commerce.

Discussions have focused on the economic potential of key road axes, including the Yola-Garoua corridor, Mubi-Mayo-Woulou, and connections to the Cameroonian Southwest. Better regulation of these routes could reduce transport delays, limit logistical costs, and enhance the competitiveness of formal operators, benefiting local economies and public revenues.

One major advancement is the promotion of the Cargo Chartering Desk (GAC), presented by the GTTC. This digital platform aims to dematerialize freight documents, improve cargo traceability, and reduce administrative burdens at borders. The announcement of an English version of the GAC represents a key opportunity to enhance interoperability with Nigerian transporters and secure bilateral trade flows.

Unions have also denounced persistent obstacles to trade fluidity, including the proliferation of road barriers and illegal practices on both sides of the border. Their commitment to promoting compliance with authorized tonnages and the passage of cargoes through official channels paves the way for better preservation of road infrastructure and a reduction in smuggling.

This momentum is also in line with the perspective of the African Continental Free Trade Area, supported by the African Union Organization for Transport and Logistics (UAOTL). The follow-up meeting announced in Garoua in December 2026 will be crucial in translating these commitments into operational results.

For Cameroon, syndicate cooperation in transport now appears as a credible catalyst for smoother, more transparent, and more growth-promoting cross-border exchanges.

The high-level meeting organized on April 15, 2026 in Yola, in the Nigerian state of Adamawa, marks a strategic advancement for the facilitation of economic exchanges between Cameroon and Nigeria.
