In response to the information circulating in the media, Afriland First Group has sought to clarify its position.

In a statement, the group recalls that it was removed from the capital of Afriland First Bank CD in July 2021, following a decision by the Congolese authorities and the Central Bank. Lack of control since 2021 Since that date, Afriland First Group claims to no longer exercise any operational, managerial, or financial control over the Congolese bank. Consequently, it states that it is completely unrelated to the current difficulties faced by the clients and partners of the institution, particularly in terms of salary payments. “The Group is not involved, directly or indirectly, in the non-payment of salaries to clients of Afriland First Bank CD,” emphasizes the management, which denies any responsibility for the ongoing social crisis in Gbadolite.

Ongoing international dispute First Group also recalls that it has initiated proceedings before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), under reference Case No. ARB/23/38. This action aims to challenge what the group describes as expropriation and to claim compensation for the damages suffered. According to the statement, the proceedings are currently ongoing, and the conclusions will be made public “in due course.” A tense social climate On the ground, the situation remains tense. The strike by healthcare personnel in Gbadolite highlights the persistent vulnerabilities of certain local financial institutions and their direct repercussions on public services and the population.

By formally dissociating itself from Afriland First Bank CD, Afriland First Group seeks to preserve its image with its partners and the general public, while shifting the responsibility for the current management to the authorities and leaders in place since 2021.

At the beginning of February 2026, a “dry strike” observed by healthcare personnel in Gbadolite, Democratic Republic of Congo, due to non-payment of bonuses and salaries, has brought the financial situation of the local branch of Afriland First Bank CD back into the spotlight.
