The last industrial “empire” of France in Africa, the brewer and soda producer is in the midst of a serious internal struggle<\/span><\/span> between the heirs of its founder<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Pierre Castel<\/span><\/span>, 99 years old, <\/span><\/span>and the new all-powerful <\/span><\/span>CEO.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Appointed <\/span><\/span>CEO of the Castel group in October 2023, Gr\u00e9gory Clerc imposed his cutting-edge style <\/span><\/span>from the start<\/span><\/span>, aiming to clean up the Augean stables and distance himself from a burdensome and even <\/span><\/span>dusty <\/span><\/span>family management. Having been the historic tax lawyer, as well as the confidant<\/span><\/span> of the patriarch Pierre Castel, born in 1926, the man knows all the secrets and corners of the brewing and wine group. <\/span><\/span>But behind the new projects, the <\/span><\/span>desired modernization and <\/span><\/span>the refocusing of several activities<\/span><\/span> lies above all an <\/span><\/span>unspoken strategy: taking <\/span><\/span>control <\/span><\/span>of the <\/span><\/span>main <\/span><\/span>assets of the group and, ultimately, of the group itself.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gr\u00e9gory Clerc is thus dangerously shaking up the culture of<\/span><\/span> an empire known for its discretion and sitting on a real fortune, especially in Africa. Pierre Castel’s first ventures <\/span><\/span>on the continent date back to 1949. Over the years, <\/span><\/span>the man who was <\/span><\/span>close to many African heads of state <\/span><\/span>including <\/span><\/span>Angolan Eduardo Dos Santos, has built an <\/span><\/span>economic empire <\/span><\/span>that is vast and diversified<\/span><\/span> (breweries, agro-industry, sugar mills…) with a turnover of nearly \u20ac7 billion in 2024.<\/span><\/span> And for good reason. Of all the economic sectors in Africa, the beer and soda sector is <\/span><\/span>arguably the most resistant to crises.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Neutralized Heirs <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Gr\u00e9gory Clerc’s ambitions <\/span><\/span>naturally clash with the desires of <\/span><\/span>Pierre Castel’s descendants<\/span><\/span> including his daughter Romy and <\/span><\/span>several nephews. <\/span><\/span>To establish his new directions, <\/span><\/span>Gr\u00e9gory Clerc gradually “neutralized” them<\/span><\/span> using strong methods. <\/span><\/span>Pierre Castel’s nephew, Alain Castel, an administrator of the Cassiopeia holding company overseeing many African activities through DF <\/span><\/span>Holging<\/span><\/span> (<\/span><\/span>Somdiaa<\/span><\/span>, Castel Africa\u2026)<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>was simply <\/span><\/span>thanked and dismissed from his position on December 6th. This <\/span><\/span>shocking decision was preceded by the departure, at the end of 2024, of two other nephews of<\/span><\/span> the founder<\/span><\/span>: Michel and Jean-Claude Palu. They were <\/span><\/span>administrators within Brasseries et Glaci\u00e8res Internationales (BGI) and Brasseries Internationales Holding (BIH).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Other figures like S\u00e9bastien <\/span><\/span>Castegnaro<\/span><\/span>, director of the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des Brasseries de l\u2019Ouest Africain (<\/span><\/span>Soboa<\/span><\/span>), have left the company <\/span><\/span>following <\/span><\/span>Gr\u00e9gory Clerc’s arrival. <\/span><\/span>Just like <\/span><\/span>S\u00e9batien<\/span><\/span>-Yves M\u00e9nager, director of the Brasseries du Maroc acquired by Castel in 2003.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lieutenants <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Alongside this witch hunt, Gr\u00e9gory Clerc is placing <\/span><\/span>his<\/span><\/span> loyal lieutenants. Executives mainly from other <\/span><\/span>economic groups <\/span><\/span>to bring a fresh perspective <\/span><\/span>such as Cathy Geiger from the Picard group or Mathieu Seguin. The latter, an executive at <\/span><\/span>Coca-Cola Company, took over the Malagasy subsidiary Brasseries Star Madagascar. Coming from Lactalis, Diogo Victoria was appointed to head the Togolese subsidiary, Bras<\/span><\/span>serie BB Lom\u00e9, in Togo. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gr\u00e9gory Clerc has appointed <\/span><\/span>other <\/span><\/span>close associates to the <\/span><\/span>management and decision-making bodies<\/span><\/span>. This is the <\/span><\/span>case of Pascal Favre, appointed director of Castel Africa, representing the lion’s share of the group’s turnover. <\/span><\/span>He <\/span><\/span>succeeds Gil Martignac, who left in 2023 <\/span><\/span>after disagreements with Michel and Jean-Claude Palu. Contacted by <\/span><\/span>Financial <\/span><\/span>Afrik<\/span><\/span>, Gil Martignac declined to answer our questions. Other personalities<\/span><\/span> considered close to Gr\u00e9gory Clerc like Jean-Louis Van <\/span><\/span>Haech<\/span><\/span> have been appointed administrators within Cassiopeia. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Faced with this<\/span><\/span> grip of Gr\u00e9gory Clerc, <\/span><\/span>Pierre Castel’s descendants <\/span><\/span>have decided <\/span><\/span>to counterattack. Romy Castel<\/span><\/span> has called for an extraordinary general meeting of Investment Beverage Business Management (IBBM), the main holding of the group <\/span><\/span>of which Gr\u00e9gory Clerc is an <\/span><\/span>administrator. The date of this meeting <\/span><\/span>has been set for <\/span><\/span>January 8th. Objective?
