{"id":476368,"date":"2022-09-01T09:27:12","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T09:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kapitalafrik.com\/?p=476368"},"modified":"2022-09-01T09:42:10","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T09:42:10","slug":"gca-report-reveals-funding-crisis-for-climate-adaptation-in-africa-global-leaders-must-act-to-close-the-investment-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.financialafrik.com\/en\/2022\/09\/01\/gca-report-reveals-funding-crisis-for-climate-adaptation-in-africa-global-leaders-must-act-to-close-the-investment-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"GCA report reveals funding crisis for climate adaptation in Africa Global leaders must act to close the investment gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pdfprnt-buttons pdfprnt-buttons-post pdfprnt-top-bottom-left\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Macky Sall\u2019s bold leadership is vital for accelerating global action on climate adaptation ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gca.org\/events\/africa-adaptation-summit\/\">Africa Adaptation Summit<\/a> on 5 September 2022, Dr. Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gca.org\/\">Global Center on Adaptation<\/a> said in closing remarks at the Presidential Palace in Dakar, after a high-level meeting on Wednesday hosted by President Macky Sall of Senegal, Chair of the African Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Africa Adaptation Summit will convene global leaders at the headquarters of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) in Rotterdam, Netherlands, marking a milestone leading into the landmark \u2018African COP\u2019 at Sharm El-Sheikh in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the Summit, global leaders are prioritizing the mobilization of adaptation finance to accelerate adaptation action for Africa through the <a href=\"https:\/\/gca.org\/programs\/aaap\/\">Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP)<\/a>. Endorsed by the African Union, the AAAP lays the foundation for economic growth and job creation through climate adaptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe long-predicted climate emergency is here, and it is amplifying the global food, fuel, and fiscal crisis created by Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine. Africans have contributed almost nothing to creating climate change, yet this continent is suffering far more than other regions of the planet\u201d, said President Macky Sall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program is Africa\u2019s plan that will unlock adaptation finance for food security, resilient infrastructure, and adaptation jobs in Africa. At the Africa Adaptation Summit, it is vital that the international community delivers on its pledge to double adaptation finance and to scale adaptation action for Africa through the AAAP\u201d, he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gap in adaptation finance for Africa is underlined by GCA\u2019s new report on <a href=\"https:\/\/gca.org\/reports\/financial-innovation-for-climate-adaptation-in-africa-2022\/\"><em>Financial Innovation for Climate Adaptation in Africa<\/em><\/a>, which highlights that cumulative adaptation finance to 2030 will come to less than one-quarter of the estimated needs stated by African countries in their National Determined Contributions (NDCs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the report, in 2019 and 2020 an estimated $11.4 billion was committed to climate adaptation finance in Africa with more than 97% of the funds coming from public actors and less than 3% from private sectors. This is significantly less than the $52.7 billion annually to 2030 it is estimated African countries will need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commenting on the report findings, Prof. Dr. Patrick Verkooijen said: \u201cAdaptation finance is scaling too slowly to close the investment gap in Africa, even as the costs of inaction rise. With two months to go until COP27, we must increase both the volume and variety of capital available for adaptation in Africa by fully funding the AAAP.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) was developed by the African Development Bank and the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) to mobilize $25 billion by 2025 to implement, scale and accelerate climate adaptation across the African continent. AAAP works across four bold interconnected pillars to achieve transformational results: Climate-Smart Digital Technologies for Agriculture and Food Security; African Infrastructure Resilience Accelerator; Youth Empowerment for Entrepreneurship and Job Creation in Climate Adaptation and Resilience and Innovative Financial Initiatives for Africa.
