The\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Youlima<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Youth Incubator\u00a0Program\u00a0award ceremony\u00a0marked the conclusion of\u00a0the\u00a0program\u2019s entrepreneurial training of\u00a030\u00a0youths\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bukavu<\/span><\/span>, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF), with catalytic funding from\u00a0Citi\u00a0Foundation, launched and created a successful youth business model based on entrepreneurial training leading to income-generating activities across various sectors of the economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Action Social et D\u2019Organisation Payssane (ASOP),\u00a0USADF\u2019s\u00a0technical partner\u00a0in the DRC,\u00a0assessed employers, youth and entrepreneurs to evaluate the skills which would best meet the needs of the community and local economy.\u00a0After receiving\u00a0over 300 applications,\u00a0USADF and ASOP selected\u00a0a cohort of 30 youths, comprised of\u00a015\u00a0men,\u00a015\u00a0women, and\u00a05\u00a0people\u00a0living\u00a0with disabilities. Of those 30 participants,\u00a0USADF implemented an intensive\u00a0application selection process\u00a0to select the 20 youths receiving $5,000 in\u00a0seed capital funding.\u00a0USADF\u00a0will work\u00a0directly\u00a0with the 20 youths to ensure each entrepreneur has a viable\u00a0and sustainable\u00a0business plan, creates and sustains jobs, and\u00a0improves income opportunities for their community.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As part of this initiative Citi Foundation provided\u202f$200,000<\/span><\/span> under its Pathways to Progress global program supporting youth economic empowerment. The funding was used to establish the framework necessary to\u00a0identify\u00a0opportunities to create successful\u00a0youth and women-led businesses through\u00a0training and seed capital for entrepreneurs. \u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am struck by the creativity and extraordinary resourcefulness of the entrepreneurs in Bukavu,\u201d said Willy Mulamba, Citi Country Officer for DRC. \u201cThe Citi Foundation is honored to partner with USADF and ASOP to promote and develop entrepreneurship in eastern DRC and help unlock the incredible economic potential of this region.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Youth Incubator\u00a0was designed\u00a0to create\u00a0youth-centric\u00a0opportunities\u00a0that\u00a0empower young people to develop income-generating and community-building projects.\u00a0The program breaks entrenched negative cycles of poverty and violence\u00a0with the aim of lowering the number of socio-economically distressed and disenfranchised youth\u00a0that\u00a0are\u202foften vulnerable to the manipulation and coercion\u202fof\u202farmed groups and militias in the DRC.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
