This transaction helped finance the shipment of phosphate fertilizers from Morocco to Ethiopia. This initiative is part of the Group’s digitalization strategy aimed at contributing in particular to reducing the trade finance gap in Africa and stimulating intra-African trade, in particular in the fertilizer sector, through digital inclusion. .

Dltledgers blockchain technology allows all stakeholders to complete the transaction digitally and complete the import-export transaction in less than two hours. Equivalent “paper” transactions typically take three weeks or more, due to the time it takes suppliers to transfer physical documents to the buyer through the traditional banking system. With the current slowdown in global logistics and supply chains, trade finance transactions can take up to six weeks, due to border and airport closures that continue to cause further delays.

In the case of this operation, the parties can download, view, modify and validate the documentation in a private blockchain, simultaneously and in real time. In addition, blockchain technology has many advantages: a lower carbon footprint, more secure operations thanks to encryption and verification technologies, more transparency and traceability, and the reduction of risks thanks to the elimination of possible errors and ambiguities in the exchange and modification of documents.

These transactions are carried out as global trade contracted 5-10% in 2020, compared to the previous year, in parallel with the drop in demand for trade finance.

TDB facilitated more than half a billion dollars in trade finance to Ethiopia in 2020, and has supported nearly one billion dollars in fertilizer imports from OCP Group to Ethiopia over the past three years. TDB facilitates trade finance in Ethiopia by providing solutions that help meet foreign exchange needs and enable the import of vital agricultural and energy products, including fertilizers, wheat and sugar. Imported fertilizer increases crop yields and productivity levels, improves food security, increases foreign exchange earnings from cash crops and supports local employment.

In October 2019, TDB became the first African development finance institution to complete a trade finance transaction using blockchain technology, financing the import of 50,000 tonnes of white sugar from India to the region it dessert. This innovative transaction served as an example for the global trade finance industry, while also creating a model that TDB was able to replicate for other transactions such as this intra-African transaction.

The OCP Group has always emphasized the need for intra-African collaboration to meet the challenge of structured, efficient and sustainable agriculture. This cooperation is also in line with TDB’s mandate, which aims to promote intra and inter-regional trade, as well as its integration in the region it serves and on the continent, in line with the actions of the AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area).

Agriculture plays a vital role in Ethiopia’s economy, accounting for 31% of the country’s GDP and 66% of its labor market. Fertilizers are fundamental for the sector, insofar as about half of these products are imported to the OCP Group from Morocco.
