A\u00a0 joint declaration in support of the African Education Fund was produced after a workshop organised in Abidjan 16 -17 July, 2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4269808652728290036m_6955823041775584578CxSpMiddle\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe African Education Fund is a vision many education stakeholders in Africa have had but could not put into practice. It is no longer just a vision \u2013 it is a reality,\u201d Oley Dibba Wadda, the Bank\u2019s Director of human capital, youth and skills development, told more than 50 attendees representing 12 African governments, 4 regional economic communities and other development partners specialising in finance, skills development, and education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4269808652728290036m_6955823041775584578CxSpMiddle\">\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">Workshop organisers sought inputs from regional member countries on the structure of the African Education Fund and highlighted the need to strengthen its position as a \u2018go to\u2019 resource for financing education across the continent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4269808652728290036m_6955823041775584578CxSpMiddle\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe AEF is a unique, Africa-initiated and continental\u00a0mechanism for resourcing post-secondary education in Africa\u201d said Albert Nsengiyumva, Executive Secretary of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4269808652728290036m_6955823041775584578CxSpMiddle\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Beatrice Njenga, Head of the Education Division at the African Union Commission, reminded workshop participantsthat\u00a0the Fund was not intended to be a substitute for existing funding\u00a0mechanisms. \u201cThe African Education Fund complements these mechanisms at national and international levels\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">C\u00f4te d\u2018Ivoire\u2019s Minister of education and<\/span>\u00a0technical, vocational education and training,\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">Kandia K. Camara,\u00a0<\/span>opened the workshop,\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">emphasising the need for countries to be accountable and to take ownership of Africa\u2019s education and training.
