Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), about fifteen, are in conclave since Saturday in Addis Ababa for an extraordinary summit on the reform of the institution.<\/p>\n

In his opening address, the organization’s chair, the organization’s chairman, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said that “this reform is also and above all a matter of political will,” after having praised the efforts already made in this direction.<\/p>\n

Despite the road traveled, he insisted, many of the projects open to reform remain to be concluded. And call on heads of state to take into account the need for the Commission to have a greater degree of flexibility in administrative management, to allow it to respond more quickly and effectively to operational challenges related to the implementation of its responsibilities in the service of the Member States.<\/p>\n

Responded to this extraordinary call this weekend in the Ethiopian capital, South African Cyril Ramaphosa, Ivorian Alassane Ouattara, Guinean Alpha Conde, Nigerian Mahamadou Issoufou, Chadian Idriss Deby Itno, Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh and Rwandan Paul Kagame, who is also the current chairman of the AU.<\/p>\n

“Advancing the institutional reform of our union is the goal of this session,” said the Rwandan. “Events on our continent and around the world continue to confirm the urgency and need for this goal: to further strengthen Africa and ensure its children the future they need. We are at the rendezvous and we have passed halfway. The end is near, “he added.<\/p>\n

The summit is strictly dedicated to the reform of the AU Commission, including its structure, its attributions, the process of selection and election, among others.<\/p>\n
