Capital Fisheries has an innovative business model of wholesaling frozen products from reconfigured shipping containers placed permanently at markets, small shopping centres and other areas where people congregate. Further north, the\u00a0<strong>Yield Uganda Investment Fund<\/strong>, managed by\u00a0<strong>Pearl Capital Partners<\/strong>, made its maiden investment in the East African country by committing about $421,000 to soy-processor Sesaco.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International investors are also getting in on the action. For instance, the\u00a0<strong>Moringa<\/strong>\u00a0investment fund backed\u00a0<strong>Jus D\u00e9lice<\/strong>, a Togolese company developing a pineapple juice factory supplied by a large network of organic farmers. Canada\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Fairfax Africa<\/strong>\u00a0has also shown its confidence in the sector by providing South African agri-processor\u00a0<strong>Philafrica<\/strong>\u00a0with a R330 million (about $25.7 million) secured financing facility. In addition, European firms\u00a0<strong>Triodos Investment Management<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>AlphaMundi Group<\/strong>\u00a0could soon increase their investments in the industry after launching a new impact investing fund of about $23 million, targeting agriculture and renewable energy firms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology is playing an increasingly prominent role in food production and distribution\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and venture capital investors are taking note. South Africa\u2019s\u00a0<strong>GreenFingers Mobile<\/strong>, an agtech platform that manages and finances large groups of smallholder farmers, has secured a second round of equity seed funding from the\u00a0<strong>Hivos Food &amp; Lifestyle Fund<\/strong>. The investment will be used to optimise its online platform and existing farm-to-last-mile supply chain. Furthermore,\u00a0<strong>Easyshop Easycook<\/strong>, a Nigeria-based fresh food processor and online grocer, targeting working professional and SMEs, has announced its seed financing round led by the\u00a0<strong>EchoVC Pan-African Fund<\/strong>. And in the fast-moving consumer goods distribution space, Nigeria\u2019s\u00a0<strong>TradeDepot<\/strong>\u00a0recently secured a $3-million series-A round, with\u00a0<strong>Partech\u00a0<\/strong>as the principal investor, to digitally integrate all participants in the trade value chain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The banking and financial services industry also saw an uptick in activity in May.\u00a0<strong>Amethis<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>AfricInvest<\/strong>\u00a0joined forces to invest in Morocco\u2019s\u00a0<strong>CFG Bank<\/strong>, a pioneering investment banking business. The capital injection will further support CFG\u2019s expansion into retail banking. In addition, AfricInvest finalised its agreement to invest approximately $55 million in\u00a0<strong>Britam Holdings<\/strong>, a leading financial services group in East Africa. The investment will be made in partnership with Germany\u2019s\u00a0<strong>DEG<\/strong>; Dutch development finance institution\u00a0<strong>FMO<\/strong>; and\u00a0<strong>Proparco<\/strong>, a French organisation focused on private sector development.
