The Togolese government announced Tuesday (May 8th) the upcoming extension of the duration and scope of licenses granted to the two telephone operators operating in the country.<\/p>\n

Indeed, a decree adopted by the Council of Ministers authorizes the Minister in charge of the digital economy, Cina Lawson, to sign the decrees to that effect. “Due to their imminent expiration, the purpose of the decree is to extend the duration of the GSM licenses (2G and 3G) of Togo Cellular and Atlantic Telecom (Moov), until 2032,” says the report of the meet.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Minister is authorized to allocate to both companies the 4G licenses in accordance with the action plan adopted in the sectoral policy statement.<\/p>\n

According to the Government, this decision aims, inter alia, “to mobilize exceptional financial resources in the framework of the 2018 Finance Act”, as soon as possible, and to allow consumers to access 4G services, “as this is already the case in virtually all the countries of the subregion “.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the Executive had already instructed the Minister, since August 2016, to enter into negotiations with operators for the granting of 4G licenses.<\/p>\n

In addition, the call for tenders for the award of a third license for the establishment and operation of telecommunications networks and services, launched in June 2014, remained a dead letter.<\/p>\n
