Translatd from French by Liana Cramer<\/b> On Monday\u00a0January 2nd,\u00a0Nigerian President\u00a0Goodluck Johnathon\u00a0narrowly\u00a0escaped an attack that occurred in a stadium\u00a0just\u00a0outside his meeting.\u00a0A bomb exploded as\u00a0President Goodluck Johnathon\u2019s\u00a0convoi\u00a0proceeded\u00a0from the stadium. This explosion, in the city of Gombe, killed two people.   This meeting was a part of the Nigerian President\u2019s campaign for the upcoming February 14th\u00a0election.\u00a0Indeed, the President of Nigeria officially announced\u00a0his bid to run for a second presidential mandate on November 11th\u00a0of last year.   However,\u00a0his\u00a0track record may\u00a0be a\u00a0handicap for him.Economic performance during his presidency\u00a0has been mixed, according to the International Monetary Fund.\u00a0Thisfinancial institution indicates that\u00a0economic growth in the country as Goodluck Johnthan came to power in 2010 was 10.6%,\u00a0despite\u00a0the financial\u00a0crisis\u00a0of 2007\u00a0–\u00a02008.\u00a0Nigeria\u2019seconomic growth in the subsequent years\u00a0fell by half, to 5% between 2011 and 2013,\u00a0for which there is no clear explanation (some attribute it to corruption).\u00a0Economic growth is expected to experience a slight increase for 2014 and 2015, rising to\u00a0approximately\u00a07%.   From\u00a0the\u00a0evidence of the IMF, the real problem is that Nigeria had an average of 9.6% economic growth between 2004 and 2010, with a\u00a0record high of 13.3% in 2004.\u00a0Goodluck Johnthan\u00a0thus\u00a0failed to ensure the sustainability of the country\u2019s economic performance,\u00a0further delaying\u00a0the country\u2019s emergence.   “Inflation\u00a0also\u00a0shrunk\u00a0from 13.7% in 2010 to 8.5% in 2013,\u00a0and it\u00a0is\u00a0estimated\u00a0at\u00a08.3% for 2014 and 8.7% for\u00a02015.Furthermore, investments, which comprised 21.7% of GDP in 2009, have fallen. Since\u00a0Goodluck Jonathan\u00a0rose to power\u00a0investments in the country have\u00a0faced\u00a0downward trend, from 17.3% of GDP to 15.2% of GDP, reported the IMF.   The President\u2019s campaign is also\u00a0occuring\u00a0during a\u00a0severesecurity crisis in\u00a0Nigeria, particularly\u00a0in the\u00a0northeast\u00a0of the country, where Boko Haram controls more than 20 localities and has killed\u00a0thousands.   During his\u00a0term,\u00a0Goodluck Johnathon, who promised to make security issues a priority,\u00a0has\u00a0failed to stem the Islamist insurgency and to fight corruption,\u00a0which is\u00a0an endemic problem for the continent\u2019s greatest economic power and largest oil producer.   It will be a challenge for\u00a0Goodluck Johnathon to defend\u00a0his\u00a0poor track record, especially\u00a0as Boko Haram\u00a0recently carried out another massacre, during which in less than two weeks\u00a02000 people were left dead and 16 villages burned.   Despite\u00a0all\u00a0this, experts believe that the\u00a0current\u00a0president is likely to win reelection on\u00a0February\u00a014th\u00a02015, as\u00a0the ruling party\u00a0mobilizes significant funds\u00a0for the re-election of its representatives. Goodluck Johnathon, 57 years old, has lead Nigeria since the death of his predecessor Umaru Yar\u2019Adua in 2010.   His primary opponent, former military leader Muhammadu Buhari,\u00a0has\u00a0highlighted\u00a0Goodluck Johnathon\u2019s inability to neutralize Boko Haram.<\/p>\n
